"I am very comfortable entering this season coming from behind," Hodes said to the cheers of more than 125 supporters who lined the hallway outside Secretary of State Bill Gardner's office.

Four years ago, six-term Republican congressman Charles Bass looked unbeatable in the early polls too, Hodes said.

"Remember in 2006, when I ran, in July I was down by 30 points, and we ended up winning by seven," Hodes recalled.

Hodes also pledged never to vote to lift the ban on offshore drilling in New England.
