Foster's Daily Democrat: Hodes wants to amend U.S. Constitution regarding political contributions

Posted 02/02/2010 by Adam D. Krauss
DOVER — Congressman Paul Hodes says the U.S. Constitution should be amended in response to the Supreme Court's decision on campaign financing.

Late last month the court threw out parts of a decades-old law prohibiting companies and unions from using money from their general treasuries to run campaign ads for or against a candidate.

Hodes, a Democratic candidate for Senate, said voters should decide the election, not special interests.

"Washington is broken — and this will only make business as usual worse," he said in a statement. "The last thing the people of New Hampshire need is more corporate interests, especially foreign corporations, meddling in our political process and drowning out the voices of New Hampshire's middle-class families."

Hodes said he's consulted with constitutional scholars and believes "a constitutional amendment is necessary. It will empower the people of the Granite State to stop unlimited special interest money from drowning out their voices. If we delay action, we let business as usual in Washington continue.'

Hodes' campaign said he will introduce the exact language of the amendment in the coming days.
